the origin of the big mac

In 1967, Jim Delligatti introduced what would become the world-famous Big Mac. However, its original name wasn’t what we know today.

At first, it was called “The Aristocrat,” followed by “Blue Ribbon Burger.” It wasn’t until 21-year-old advertising secretary Esther Glickstein Rose suggested the now-iconic name, "Big Mac."

By 1968, the Big Mac had become so popular that McDonald’s added it to the menu of every U.S. franchise.

In 1974, McDonald’s launched an ad campaign featuring a catchy jingle listing the burger’s ingredients:

“Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.”

From that point on, the sauce became known as the “special sauce,” though many still refer to it as the “secret sauce.”

big mac sauce ingredients

The original McDonald’s Big Mac Sauce contains some hard-to-pronounce ingredients, but this delicious copycat recipe is made with simple pantry staples.

Big Mac sauce is an easy mix of condiments and spices:

  • Mayonnaise: The creamy base that adds tang.
  • Yellow Mustard: Adds tanginess with a slight bitterness.
  • Sweet Pickle Relish: Brings sweetness, tang, and a bit of crunch.
  • Granulated Sugar: For a touch of sweetness.
  • White Wine Vinegar: Balances the flavors with a sour note.
  • Paprika, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder: These spices add depth and a kick.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Want it sweeter? Add a bit of ketchup for extra sweetness and tang.
  • Make it smoky! A tablespoon or two of barbecue sauce will give it a smoky twist.
  • Let the flavors mingle. For the best taste, let the sauce sit in the fridge for at least an hour to allow the flavors to meld, though it’s not required.

Enjoy this simple, flavorful Big Mac sauce on anything from burgers to fries!

How to Use Big Mac Sauce

While Big Mac Sauce is a classic choice for burgers, it has so many other uses!

You’ll find endless ways to enjoy it, so make sure to double the recipe!

Big Mac Sauce isn’t just for burgers

– it adds incredible flavor to all kinds of savory sandwiches:

  • Fried Egg Sandwich or Egg Salad
  • Tuna Salad
  • Chicken Sandwiches (It’s amazing on a fried chicken sandwich!)
  • Club Sandwiches
  • Roast Beef

It’s even fantastic on hot dogs!

You can also use it as a dressing for salads or pasta. I love it in potato salad, and my whole family can’t get enough!

Try drizzling it over lettuce, burrito, or sandwich wraps, or use it as a dipping sauce for French fries, onion rings, or quesadillas.

How to Store

Keep the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Don’t leave it out at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

Store the sauce in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

I don’t recommend freezing Big Mac sauce since it contains mayonnaise. Freezing and thawing will affect the texture, leaving the sauce with an undesirable consistency.
